Wi-Fi Coverage Planning for Large Sites: Why a Heat Map Matters
Guessing access-point placement works for a small flat. It doesn't work for a warehouse, a hotel or a factory floor. Here's what proper coverage planning looks like.
Why 'one router per floor' fails at scale
A home can often get away with rough access-point placement because the space is small and forgiving. A warehouse with metal racking, a hotel with concrete floors between levels, or a factory with heavy machinery all absorb and reflect Wi-Fi signal in ways that make guesswork expensive — dead zones show up exactly where a scanner, a tablet or a sensor needs to work.
What a Wi-Fi heat map actually does
A heat-mapping survey measures real signal strength throughout the site — including through the specific walls, racking and equipment that will actually be there — and shows where coverage is weak before a single access point is mounted. That turns access-point placement into a measured decision instead of a guess corrected after complaints start.
Planning for the network's actual load, not just coverage
Coverage (can a device see the network) and capacity (can the network handle everyone connected at once) are different problems — a busy hotel lobby or a warehouse floor with dozens of handheld scanners needs access points planned for simultaneous device load, not just signal strength. This is worth specifying explicitly before a network is deployed at scale.
