A compromised camera shouldn't be a path into your accounting system. Here's why IoT devices need their own segmented network, and how that's actually set up.

Why IoT devices are a real security risk

Cameras, sensors and smart panels often run firmware that's updated less rigorously than a laptop or server, which makes them a common weak point. If every device sits on the same flat network as staff computers and business systems, a compromised camera becomes a stepping stone into everything else on that network — not just a camera problem.

What a VLAN actually does

A VLAN (Virtual LAN) segments a physical network into separate logical networks, so devices on the IoT VLAN can be restricted from talking to the business VLAN by default, even though they share the same switches and cabling. A guest Wi-Fi VLAN follows the same logic — visitors get internet access without a path into internal systems.

Getting segmentation right without breaking functionality

The goal isn't total isolation — a dashboard or app usually needs to reach devices across VLANs for monitoring and control, so segmentation is paired with firewall rules that allow only the specific, necessary traffic through. Getting this balance right (secure by default, but not so locked down that the system stops working) is a design decision worth making explicitly, not an afterthought after an incident.
