PoE Switching Explained: Powering Cameras and Sensors Without a Separate Cable

Power over Ethernet means one cable carries both data and power. Here's what that actually simplifies, and where PoE budgets get underspecified.

What PoE actually removes from a project

Without PoE, every camera or access point needs its own power socket near the installation point — which on a ceiling, a gate pillar or a warehouse rafter often means an electrician's visit just for power, separate from the network run. A PoE switch delivers both data and power down the same Cat6 cable, cutting an entire category of installation work.

Where PoE budgets get underspecified

Each PoE switch has a total power budget shared across every connected port, and PTZ cameras, multi-sensor units or larger access panels draw meaningfully more power than a basic fixed camera. A switch spec'd only against port count, not against the actual wattage of every device on it, runs out of power headroom the moment a few high-draw devices are added later.

What to check before installation

It's worth confirming PoE standard compatibility (802.3af, at, or bt) against every device's actual power draw, cable run length against voltage drop for longer distances, and whether the switch has enough spare power budget for devices likely to be added in year two — not just what's being installed on day one.
