Structured Cabling vs Wireless: Choosing the Right Backbone for a Smart Building
Wireless is easier to retrofit, but not every device and distance should rely on it. Here's how to decide what gets a cable and what doesn't.
Why cable still wins for fixed, critical devices
Cameras, access-control panels and any device that needs to stay online without interruption are almost always better served by structured cabling (Cat6 or fibre) than Wi-Fi. A wired connection doesn't compete for bandwidth with every phone and laptop on the network, doesn't degrade with distance or interference the way wireless does, and can carry power over the same cable (PoE) so there's no separate power run to plan.
Where wireless is the right call
Mobile devices, retrofit sensors on an already-finished wall, and any point where running a cable means breaking into a wall or ceiling are cases where wireless is the practical choice, not a compromise. The trade-off is planned for with proper coverage design — a wireless sensor placed without checking signal strength at that exact spot is how 'random' dropouts start.
The backbone most buildings actually need
In practice, almost every project ends up hybrid: a structured-cabling backbone to switches and access points placed for real coverage, with wireless extending from there to mobile and hard-to-reach devices. Deciding this device by device — not defaulting entirely to one or the other — is what an IoT design pass is actually for.
