Voice Assistant Integration Beyond the Big Three: Niche and Regional Options
Google, Alexa and SmartThings dominate, but they're not the only voice control options. Here's when a more specific alternative makes sense.
Why the mainstream assistants aren't always the answer
Google Home and Alexa are built for consumer use cases and don't always fit business or industrial contexts well — a factory floor announcement system or a hospitality voice-control setup often needs capabilities (multi-zone announcements, integration with a specific PMS) that consumer assistants weren't designed around.
Where local, self-hosted voice control fits
Home Assistant's voice integration, or other self-hosted options, offer more customisation and don't depend on a cloud connection to function, which matters for sites with unreliable internet or specific privacy requirements that rule out sending voice data to a third-party cloud.
Business and hospitality-specific voice systems
Some hospitality and commercial automation platforms include purpose-built voice control designed around their specific use case (a hotel room's voice-controlled amenities, for instance) rather than adapting a consumer assistant. For a business context with specific, repeated needs, this purpose-built approach is often a better fit than forcing a consumer product into a role it wasn't designed for.
