Every smart device runs on one of a handful of wireless protocols, and the choice affects reliability, battery life and how many devices a network can handle.
Wi-Fi: simple, but not built for dozens of devices
Wi-Fi devices connect directly to your router with no extra hub required, which makes setup simple. But every Wi-Fi device adds load to the router, and a home or building with dozens of Wi-Fi sensors and switches can genuinely strain a standard router not built for that many simultaneous connections.
Zigbee and Z-Wave: mesh networks built for scale
Both Zigbee and Z-Wave are low-power mesh protocols designed specifically for large numbers of small devices — each device can relay signal to the next, extending range without needing every device to reach the hub directly. This makes them a better fit for sites with many sensors and switches, at the cost of needing a dedicated hub that speaks the protocol.
Which one actually matters more: hub compatibility
Zigbee and Z-Wave devices from different brands don't automatically work together — they still need a common hub, and not every hub supports both protocols equally well. The practical decision usually isn't 'Zigbee vs Z-Wave' in isolation, it's which hub and ecosystem you've already committed to, and choosing devices that hub actually supports well.
