Matter Explained: Will It Finally Fix Smart Home Compatibility
Matter promises one standard that works across Google, Amazon, Apple and Samsung devices. Here's what it actually delivers today, and where the gaps still are.
The problem Matter is trying to solve
For years, buying a smart device meant checking it worked with your specific ecosystem — a device built for Alexa often wasn't guaranteed to work properly with Google Home or SmartThings. Matter is an industry standard backed by Google, Amazon, Apple and Samsung, designed so a Matter-certified device works across all of their platforms without separate integrations for each.
What it actually covers today
Matter's current device support is real but not universal — it covers common categories well (lighting, plugs, locks, some sensors) but plenty of device types and existing non-Matter products aren't covered yet. A home or building with a mix of Matter and legacy devices still needs some form of bridging to bring everything under one control layer.
What this means for a project today
Matter is worth favouring when choosing new devices going forward, since it protects against ecosystem lock-in better than proprietary alternatives. But it isn't a reason to wait — existing non-Matter devices and legacy equipment still need proper integration work now, and Matter compatibility can be layered in as it becomes more complete rather than as a prerequisite.
