RESTful APIs vs GraphQL: What Powers Modern Dashboard Integrations

Two common ways modern software systems expose data to each other. Here's the practical difference, without diving into deep technical detail.

RESTful APIs: the common, well-established default

A REST API exposes data through a set of defined endpoints, each returning a fixed structure of information — it's the most widely used approach for connecting software systems, well understood by most developers, and the default choice for most integration projects unless there's a specific reason to choose otherwise.

GraphQL: more flexible, at some added complexity

GraphQL lets the requesting system specify exactly which pieces of data it wants in a single request, rather than receiving a fixed structure and discarding what's not needed — this can be more efficient for complex dashboards pulling varied data, but requires more upfront setup and is less universally supported than REST.

Why this choice rarely matters much for a typical project

For most dashboard and integration projects, the choice between REST and GraphQL is a backend implementation detail that doesn't meaningfully affect the end result a client sees — what matters far more is whether a given platform exposes any usable API at all, and how well-documented and reliable it is, regardless of which specific style it uses.
