How geofencing actually works

A geofence is a virtual boundary set around a location (your home) — your phone's automation app monitors whether your phone is inside or outside that boundary, and triggers a scene (arriving home: unlock the door, turn on lights; leaving: lock up, arm security) automatically as you cross it.

Where geofencing genuinely shines

It removes the need to remember to manually trigger a scene — a family with multiple members can each have their own geofence-triggered arrival scene, and the system handles it automatically regardless of who forgot to check the app. It's especially useful for the 'did I lock up' anxiety many people feel after leaving home.

Where it can be unreliable and what to do about it

GPS accuracy on phones can occasionally be imprecise, especially in dense urban areas with tall buildings, occasionally causing a scene to trigger a bit early or late, or not fire reliably if the phone's location services are restricted for battery-saving reasons. It's worth keeping a manual override always available rather than depending entirely on geofencing for anything safety-critical.
