Why indoor air quality is easy to underestimate

A home that looks and smells clean can still have poor indoor air quality — particulate matter from outdoor pollution seeping in, elevated CO2 from a sealed, air-conditioned room with poor ventilation, or VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from furniture and cleaning products, none of which are visible or immediately obvious.

What an air quality monitor actually measures

PM2.5 and PM10 particulate levels, CO2 concentration (a rough proxy for how stale or well-ventilated a room's air actually is), and sometimes VOC levels and humidity, giving an actual number to a factor most households have no visibility into at all beyond a general sense of comfort.

What to actually do with that data

Beyond just displaying a number, integrating air quality data into automation — triggering an air purifier or increasing ventilation automatically when readings cross a threshold — turns passive monitoring into an actual improvement, rather than a statistic that's checked occasionally and not acted on.
