Choosing a Smart Video Doorbell: Battery vs Wired Power

A battery-powered video doorbell installs in minutes with no wiring at all, which makes it the simplest option for a rental or a home where drilling into the wall isn't wanted. The trade-off is a battery that needs periodic recharging or replacement — miss that, and the doorbell simply stops working until it's charged again.

A wired doorbell draws continuous power, so there's no battery to maintain and no risk of it dying at an inconvenient moment — but it requires either an existing doorbell wire to connect to (common in many homes already) or a new wiring run if none exists, which adds installation complexity.

If your home already has doorbell wiring, wired is usually the better long-term choice for reliability with essentially no downside. If there's no existing wiring and running new cable isn't practical, battery power is a genuinely reasonable choice — just factor the periodic charging routine into your expectations from the start.
