Power Quality 101: What Harmonics Are and Why They Damage Equipment

What harmonics actually are
Electrical equipment is designed around a clean, steady electrical waveform. Harmonics are distortions of that waveform, commonly introduced by variable-frequency drives, UPS systems, LED lighting and other electronic loads. In small amounts they're normal; in excess, they cause overheating in motors and transformers, nuisance tripping, and shortened equipment lifespan.
Why harmonics often go undetected until damage shows up
Harmonic distortion isn't something you can see or hear — equipment fails or degrades gradually, and by the time a motor burns out early or a transformer runs unusually hot, the actual cause is rarely obvious without measurement. Many facilities only investigate power quality after a pattern of unexplained equipment failures, rather than before.
How a power quality audit actually works
A power quality audit measures harmonic distortion, voltage sags and surges, and power factor at key points in the electrical system over a representative period (not just a single snapshot), and compares the results against acceptable limits. Where distortion is high, the fix is usually filters or corrective equipment at the source — the offending load — rather than a blanket fix across the whole site.
