Knowing total consumption went up 8% this month doesn't tell you why, or what to do about it — it's a symptom, not a diagnosis. A dashboard limited to that one number is technically 'monitoring,' but it doesn't give anyone enough to act on.
What an actionable energy dashboard actually shows
A breakdown by department, floor or equipment category shows where consumption is concentrated. A time-of-day view shows whether usage is happening during occupied hours or bleeding into empty ones. A comparison against the same period last month or last year shows whether a change is a trend or a one-off. Together, these turn a single number into a set of specific, answerable questions.
Alerts on the dashboard, not just historical charts
The most useful energy dashboards flag unusual consumption as it happens — a spike outside normal hours, a piece of equipment drawing more than its baseline — rather than only being useful in hindsight during a monthly review. That's the difference between a dashboard that documents the bill and one that actually helps lower it.
