Most rental agreements prohibit permanent modifications — you generally can't replace wall switches, drill into walls for cameras, or install fixed sensors without landlord permission, which rules out the retrofit approach that works well for owned homes.

Smart plugs for lamps and appliances, battery-powered or adhesive-mounted sensors (motion, door contact) that don't require drilling, a portable Wi-Fi security camera on a shelf or tripod rather than a fixed mount, and a freestanding smart speaker for voice control — all genuinely functional automation, installed and removed without leaving any trace on the property.

Some landlords are open to minor, reversible additions — a smart doorbell that doesn't require rewiring, for instance — if asked directly rather than assumed to be off-limits. It's worth having that conversation explicitly rather than ruling out every option that isn't strictly plug-and-play.
