Home Automation Cost in India: What You're Actually Paying For

Two homes of the same size can get automation quotes that differ by 5x, and both can be reasonable. The gap almost always comes down to scope, not markup: a starter setup automates lighting and a couple of switches, while a full retrofit covers every room, AC and curtain control, door locks, cameras, and sensors tied together with scene automation.

The single biggest cost driver is whether you're retrofitting an already-built, already-wired home or planning automation into new construction. Retrofit work needs wireless or hybrid switches and controllers that work with your existing wiring, which costs more per point than running fresh cabling during a build.

Number of switch and socket points being automated is the largest line item — pricing is typically per point, so a 3BHK with 40-odd points costs meaningfully more than a 2BHK with 25.

AC and curtain automation add IR/RF controllers and motors per unit, which is a different cost bucket from lighting.

Cameras, door locks and sensors (motion, water leak, door-open) are priced per device, and elderly-care additions like a fall-detection pendant are a small extra on top of a home system, not a separate project.

The ecosystem you standardise on (Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant) doesn't change hardware cost much, but it does affect which specific devices are compatible, so it's worth deciding this early rather than mid-project.

The most common overspend is automating everything on day one instead of starting with the rooms and routines that actually cause friction — usually the living room, main bedroom, and entry — and expanding later. A well-designed system is modular enough to add rooms in phase two without redoing phase one.

The second common mistake is buying a control app instead of a system: automation that only works through a phone app, with no physical switch fallback, is a problem the day the Wi-Fi goes down or a guest doesn't have the app.

A real quote needs a site visit or at minimum a floor plan with a point count, because per-point and per-device pricing is the only way to compare quotes fairly. Anyone quoting a flat number without asking how many switches, ACs and doors you have is guessing.
