The problem LoRaWAN was built to solve
A large farm, campus or industrial site can easily span distances where Wi-Fi and Zigbee simply can't reach without a chain of expensive repeaters — and running cable to every sensor across dozens of acres isn't realistic either. LoRaWAN is a long-range, low-power wireless protocol built specifically for this scale, with a single gateway able to cover several kilometres.
What makes it different from Wi-Fi-based sensors
LoRaWAN sacrifices bandwidth for range and battery life — it's not meant for streaming video or high-frequency data, but for small, periodic readings (soil moisture, tank levels, equipment status) from devices that need to run on a battery for months or years without maintenance. That trade-off is exactly right for scattered field sensors, and wrong for cameras.
Where it's worth deploying
Farms with irrigation zones spread across a large area, industrial sites with equipment monitoring spread across a sprawling campus, and any deployment where running cable or standard Wi-Fi infrastructure to every sensor point would be impractical are the clearest fit. For a compact site, more conventional protocols usually remain simpler and sufficient.
