Designing for Tablets: Wall-Mounted Dashboards for Control Rooms

A control room or security desk display needs a different design than a personal phone or laptop dashboard. Here's what changes.

Why a control room display is a different design problem

A dashboard viewed personally on a phone assumes one user, close viewing distance, and active interaction. A wall-mounted control room or security desk display is typically viewed from a distance by multiple people, running continuously rather than opened and closed, and often needs to be legible at a glance rather than requiring careful reading.

What actually changes in the design

Larger text and simpler layouts that read clearly from several feet away, auto-rotating between multiple views rather than requiring manual navigation, and a design that prioritises immediate visual status (colour-coded alerts, clear icons) over dense detail that a personal device could comfortably show.

Why this needs to be designed deliberately, not adapted after the fact

Simply displaying a personal-device dashboard on a large wall-mounted screen without redesign usually results in something either too cluttered to read at a glance or wasting the larger screen's potential. A dedicated control-room view is worth designing specifically for that context if a monitoring setup includes one, not treated as an afterthought.
