Time-Based vs Event-Based Automation Rules: Choosing the Right Trigger

Automation rules can run on a schedule or react to an actual event. Here's how to decide which trigger fits a given task.

Time-based rules: predictable, but rigid

A time-based rule runs at a fixed schedule — lights on at 6 p.m., irrigation at 5 a.m., HVAC off at close of business. It's simple and predictable, but it doesn't adapt to actual conditions: irrigation runs on schedule even after unexpected rain, HVAC runs even on a day the building is empty.

Event-based rules: responsive, but requires the right sensor

An event-based rule reacts to an actual condition — a motion sensor triggering a light, a soil-moisture reading triggering irrigation, an occupancy sensor triggering HVAC. It's more efficient and more genuinely automated, but it depends entirely on having a reliable sensor feeding accurate data; a poorly placed or miscalibrated sensor makes event-based automation worse than a simple schedule.

Most well-designed systems combine both

A schedule as the baseline with event-based overrides is a common and effective pattern — HVAC runs on a schedule but shuts off early if occupancy sensors confirm the space is empty; irrigation runs on a schedule but skips a cycle if soil moisture is already adequate. This combination gets the predictability of a schedule with the efficiency of responding to real conditions.
