Interoperability Testing: How to Verify Two Systems Actually Work Together
A vendor claiming 'compatible' doesn't mean tested and confirmed. Here's what real interoperability testing actually involves before go-live.
Why 'compatible' on a spec sheet isn't proof
Two devices or platforms listed as 'compatible' on their respective spec sheets have often only been tested against a generic reference implementation of a standard, not against each other specifically, or against the exact firmware versions actually running on site. Real-world compatibility issues frequently surface only once both systems are actually connected together.
What real interoperability testing involves
Testing the actual data flow end to end — not just confirming a connection is established, but verifying the data arriving on one side matches what was sent from the other, checking behaviour under realistic conditions (multiple devices, normal network load), and specifically testing failure scenarios (what happens if one system briefly goes offline).
Why this belongs before go-live, not after
Discovering an interoperability gap after a system is already live and depended upon is far more disruptive than catching it during a testing phase with a clear rollback plan. A proper integration project budgets time specifically for this kind of testing, rather than treating 'compatible' claims as sufficient and finding out otherwise in production.
