Thread Protocol Explained: The Mesh Network Behind Matter

What Thread actually is
Thread is a low-power, IP-based mesh networking protocol, similar in spirit to Zigbee and Z-Wave — devices relay signal to each other, extending range and reliability across a home or building — but built on internet protocol standards from the ground up, which makes it a more natural fit for connecting directly into modern IP-based networks and the cloud.
Its relationship to Matter
Thread is one of the underlying network layers Matter is commonly built on top of — Matter defines how devices communicate and are controlled, and Thread is frequently the actual radio network carrying that traffic for low-power devices, alongside Wi-Fi for higher-bandwidth devices.
Why this matters practically for buying decisions
A device labelled Thread-compatible generally needs a Thread border router (often built into a modern smart speaker or hub) to actually connect to your broader network. This is worth checking specifically when adding Thread-based devices to an existing setup, rather than assuming plug-and-play compatibility without the right hub infrastructure in place.
