DALI Lighting Control Explained
DALI is the standard behind sophisticated, individually addressable commercial lighting control. Here's what it does differently from a basic dimmer.
What DALI actually enables
Digital Addressable Lighting Interface allows every fixture on a circuit to be individually addressed and controlled, rather than grouped by circuit the way traditional lighting control works — meaning each light in an office or commercial space can be dimmed, scheduled or grouped into flexible zones independently, without rewiring.
Why this matters for commercial buildings specifically
Office layouts change — desks move, meeting rooms get reconfigured — and DALI's software-defined zoning means lighting groups can be reconfigured to match a new floor plan without any physical rewiring, a genuine advantage over traditional circuit-based lighting control where zones are fixed by how the wiring was originally run.
Where DALI is typically specified
It's most commonly found in commercial office buildings, hospitals and larger retail spaces where lighting flexibility, energy monitoring per fixture, and occupancy-based dimming deliver genuine operational and energy savings — it's generally overkill for a residential project, where simpler switch or dimmer-based automation is sufficient.
