Sensor Selection 101: Matching the Right Sensor to the Right Problem

Not every motion sensor, not every moisture sensor, and not every meter is built for the same environment. Here's how sensor selection actually works.

The environment decides the sensor, not the other way around

A soil-moisture sensor rated for a controlled indoor environment won't survive monsoon conditions in a field, and a standard indoor motion sensor mounted outdoors will misfire constantly from wind, insects and temperature swings. IP rating, operating temperature range and vibration tolerance matter as much as what the sensor measures.

Accuracy vs cost, and where it actually matters

Higher-accuracy sensors cost more, and that premium is worth paying where the reading drives a real decision — a water-tank level sensor controlling a pump, or a power-quality sensor feeding a compliance report. For a simple presence-detection use case like a lighting scene trigger, a lower-cost sensor is usually the right call, and spending more there doesn't buy anything meaningful.

Wired, wireless or battery — and what that trade-off costs later

A wired sensor never needs a battery change but costs more to install; a battery-powered wireless sensor is fast to deploy but needs a maintenance plan for battery replacement across potentially dozens of units. That ongoing maintenance cost is worth factoring into the decision up front, not discovered a year in when the first batch of batteries dies.
