RFID Frequencies Explained: Low, High and Ultra-High Frequency Compared
Not all RFID is the same — the frequency band chosen determines read range and speed, which matters directly for access control and asset tracking. Here's how.
Low frequency: short range, simple and reliable
Low Frequency RFID has a short read range (typically a few centimetres) and is commonly used in simple access-control cards — the card needs to be held close to the reader, which is a familiar, deliberate interaction that suits building entry points well.
High frequency: moderate range, common for cards and payments
High Frequency RFID (which includes NFC, discussed separately) offers a somewhat longer read range and is commonly used for access cards, ID badges, and contactless payment cards — a reasonable middle ground between LF's short range and UHF's longer reach.
Ultra-high frequency: long range, ideal for asset tracking
Ultra-High Frequency RFID can be read from several metres away, making it well suited to bulk inventory scanning or vehicle identification at a distance — a warehouse scanning many tagged items at once, or a gate automatically identifying an approaching authorised vehicle without needing a close tap, are typical UHF applications.
