Profibus and Profinet: Legacy and Modern Industrial Networking Compared
Two related but distinct industrial networking standards, one older and one modern. Here's how to tell which one a specific factory is actually running.
Profibus: the older, widely deployed standard
Profibus is a mature fieldbus protocol widely deployed in factories globally for connecting PLCs, sensors and actuators, and remains extremely common in existing industrial installations, even as newer sites increasingly move to Ethernet-based alternatives. A large share of integration work in established factories still needs to speak Profibus fluently.
Profinet: the modern, Ethernet-based successor
Profinet is Profibus's Ethernet-based successor, offering higher speed and easier integration with modern IT networks and cloud connectivity — new industrial installations increasingly specify Profinet over Profibus for exactly this reason, though the two aren't directly interchangeable without a converter.
Why identifying which one you have matters
The two require different gateway hardware to bridge into a modern dashboard, and confusing them during project scoping leads to ordering the wrong equipment. A proper site audit, checking exactly which protocol existing PLCs and equipment actually run, is the necessary first step before any integration work begins.
