The failure mode most homeowners don't think about

Many automation hubs, Wi-Fi routers and smart switches run on standard mains power with no battery backup of their own — so the moment grid power cuts, the whole automation layer goes down along with the lights, even if the home has an inverter for other circuits. A system that's invisible exactly when a power cut makes lighting and access control matter most isn't doing its job.

What proper integration looks like

The fix is straightforward but has to be planned at installation: put the automation hub, Wi-Fi router and any critical door-lock controller on the inverter-backed circuit, not the raw mains circuit. That keeps the 'brain' of the system — and the network it needs to function — alive through an outage even if some non-critical automated points aren't backed up.

For smart locks specifically, checking battery life independent of mains power matters too — most run on their own removable batteries for exactly this reason, but it's worth confirming rather than assuming.

Automatic failover, not manual switching

A well-set-up home shouldn't need anyone to flip a switch when the power goes — inverters and automatic transfer switches already handle that changeover in milliseconds for the circuits wired to them. The only automation-specific step is making sure the hub and router are on that protected side of the panel, and that scenes and routines are tested to confirm they survive a cut-and-restore cycle rather than needing a manual reset.
