Smart Locks for Indian Homes: Biometric, RFID or PIN — Which One

Smart locks aren't one product — fingerprint, RFID card, PIN pad and app-based unlock each solve a different daily problem. Here's how to pick.

What each unlock method actually solves

Fingerprint unlock is fastest for family members who live in the home daily and never need to carry a key or remember a code. RFID cards or fobs suit domestic help or family who come and go on a schedule, since a lost card can be deactivated without changing everyone else's access. PIN pads are the simplest fallback for guests or a one-time delivery, and app-based unlock is the only option that lets you grant or revoke access to someone remotely, which matters for a property manager checking a second home.

Why most smart locks support more than one method

A well-specified smart lock supports two or three of these together, because a single family rarely has one uniform access pattern — parents use fingerprint, kids use a PIN they can remember, and domestic staff use an RFID fob on a schedule. Locking yourself into a fingerprint-only device is the most common regret, since fingerprints don't always register reliably with wet or gloved hands.

What matters more than the unlock method

A mechanical key override is worth insisting on for any main door lock — a smart lock that leaves you stranded during a dead battery or app outage isn't a safety upgrade. It's also worth checking the lock's IP rating if it will face any weather exposure, and whether the access log (who unlocked the door, and when) is available to you, since that log is often the actual value of the upgrade over a traditional lock.
