Why outdoor devices are the highest-risk point
An outdoor camera, sensor or gateway mounted on a pole, gate pillar or rooftop is directly exposed to lightning-induced surges in a way indoor equipment isn't — a nearby strike doesn't need to hit the device directly to induce a damaging voltage spike through its cabling. India's monsoon season brings a real, recurring risk of exactly this kind of event.
What proper protection actually involves
Surge protection devices installed at both ends of any outdoor cable run — at the device and where the cable enters the building — absorb voltage spikes before they reach sensitive electronics. Proper grounding of poles, enclosures and cable shielding gives that surge energy somewhere safe to dissipate, rather than through the equipment itself.
Why this gets skipped, and shouldn't
Surge protection is a small line item relative to a project's total cost, which makes it an easy thing to cut when quotes are being trimmed — right up until a monsoon season takes out several outdoor devices at once, at a replacement cost far higher than the protection would have cost. This is worth insisting on explicitly for any outdoor installation, not assuming it's included.
