What full off-grid independence would actually require

Going genuinely off-grid means sizing solar generation and battery storage to cover 100% of a site's needs, including through extended cloudy periods and seasonal variation in sunlight — which typically requires significantly oversized generation and storage capacity compared to a grid-tied system sized just for average daily offset.

Why this is rarely the economically sensible choice

The capital cost of sizing a system for worst-case independence, rather than average-case offset with grid backup, is substantially higher, and much of that extra capacity sits unused most of the year when conditions are favourable — capital that would deliver a much better return deployed toward a grid-tied system plus targeted backup for critical loads instead.

What most businesses actually want, and how that's better achieved

The underlying goal — resilience against power cuts and lower reliance on the grid — is usually better and more cost-effectively achieved through a grid-tied solar system sized for genuine bill offset, combined with battery backup sized specifically for critical loads during outages, rather than attempting full independence. This delivers most of the practical benefit at a fraction of the cost.
