Energy Audits: What a Level 1, 2 and 3 Audit Actually Covers

Not every energy audit delivers the same depth. Here's what actually distinguishes a walkthrough audit from a full investment-grade one.

Level 1: a walkthrough assessment

A Level 1 audit is a relatively quick site walkthrough combined with a review of utility bills, identifying obvious, low-cost opportunities and giving a general sense of where consumption is concentrated. It's a useful starting point but doesn't involve detailed measurement — recommendations are based on visual inspection and bill analysis, not sub-metered data.

Level 2: a detailed analysis with real measurement

A Level 2 audit adds actual metering and measurement of major equipment, more detailed load profiling, and specific savings estimates with calculated payback for each recommendation — this is the level most businesses need for a genuinely actionable plan, since it's based on real data rather than a walkthrough's visual impressions.

Level 3: investment-grade audit for major capital decisions

A Level 3 audit is the most rigorous level, typically commissioned when a business is considering a significant capital investment and needs a highly detailed, defensible analysis — often required by lenders financing a major energy-efficiency project, where the audit's findings need to hold up to financial due diligence, not just internal decision-making.
