Solar + Battery Storage: Sizing a System That Actually Covers Power Cuts
A solar system sized for daytime bill savings and one sized to keep the lights on during a power cut are two different designs. Here's how to think about both.
Two different problems, one system
Solar without storage reduces your grid bill by offsetting daytime consumption, but it doesn't help during a power cut — grid-tied inverters shut down when the grid does, for safety. If backup during outages matters to you, battery storage (or a hybrid inverter) is what actually solves that, not panel count alone.
Sizing for savings
Panel capacity should be sized against your actual daytime load and available roof area, not a round number. Oversizing panels without matching inverter and load capacity wastes generation; undersizing means you're still drawing meaningfully from the grid during the day.
Sizing for backup
Battery capacity should be sized against your essential backup load (lights, fans, refrigeration, Wi-Fi, a few sockets) and how many hours of outage you're planning for — not your full household load, which would need an uneconomically large battery bank.
It's worth separating 'critical' circuits onto a backup sub-panel during installation, so the battery only has to carry what actually matters during an outage, extending backup runtime significantly for the same battery size.
What's easy to overlook
Net metering approval timelines and paperwork with the local utility (DISCOM) can take longer than the physical installation — it's worth starting that process early rather than after panels are up.
A monitoring dashboard for generation and consumption isn't cosmetic — it's what tells you within days, not months, if a string of panels is underperforming.
