Why networks sized exactly for today become a problem
A network built with just enough switch ports, exactly enough Wi-Fi coverage, and exactly enough bandwidth for the devices installed on day one works fine — until the business adds a new wing, a new camera zone, or a new set of sensors, and discovers the network has no room to absorb them without a significant redesign.
What designing with headroom actually means
Switches specified with spare ports beyond current need, cabling and conduit runs sized with extra capacity, and Wi-Fi coverage planned generously rather than to the exact minimum all cost a modest amount more up front but avoid a disruptive and expensive retrofit later. This is a standard principle in good network design, not a luxury add-on.
How to plan for growth you can't fully predict
Even without knowing exactly what will be added in two years, most businesses have a reasonable sense of their growth trajectory — more locations, more automated processes, more monitored equipment — and that trajectory is worth discussing explicitly with whoever's designing the network, so headroom is built in proportionate to realistic future need rather than guessed at.
