RS485 and BLE: The Protocols Behind Industrial and Wearable Devices

Two protocols that rarely get discussed outside technical circles, but show up constantly — one in industrial equipment, one in wearables and beacons.

RS485: the wired standard behind industrial sensors

RS485 is a wired communication standard commonly used for industrial sensors, meters and controllers over longer distances than standard Ethernet allows without extra equipment. It's not glamorous, but it's extremely reliable in noisy industrial environments where wireless signal would be unreliable, which is exactly why it's still the default in many factories and plants.

BLE: low-power wireless for wearables and short-range devices

Bluetooth Low Energy is built for devices that need to run on a small battery for a long time and only need to communicate over a short range — panic pendants, fitness wearables, some door locks and proximity beacons all commonly use BLE for exactly this reason. It's not designed for long-range or high-bandwidth use, which is why it's rarely used for cameras or continuous data streams.

Why these matter for an integration project

A fall-detection pendant (BLE) and a factory pressure sensor (RS485) are about as different as devices get, but both need a gateway that speaks their specific protocol to reach a dashboard at all. Recognising which protocol a given device actually uses — rather than assuming everything is Wi-Fi — is a basic but frequently skipped step in scoping an integration correctly.
