Push Notifications vs SMS vs Email: Choosing the Right Alert Channel

Not every alert should go through the same channel. Here's how to match urgency and audience to the right notification method.

Push notifications: fast, but only if the app is installed and noticed

App push notifications are fast and free to send, and the right default for most alerts — but they depend on the app being installed, notifications being enabled, and the recipient actually seeing their phone. For a genuinely urgent alert, that's not always a safe assumption.

SMS: reaches almost anyone, at a per-message cost

SMS doesn't require an app or even a smartphone, and tends to get noticed faster than a push notification for most people, but it costs per message sent, which matters at scale. It's the right choice for genuinely critical alerts where reliability of delivery matters more than cost — a fire alert, a security breach.

Email: good for detail, poor for urgency

Email is the right channel for detailed reports, summaries and non-urgent updates — it can carry more content and formatting than push or SMS — but it's a poor choice for time-sensitive alerts, since most people don't check email in real time the way they might glance at a phone notification.
