Why fixed schedules ignore an obvious input

Irrigation on a fixed schedule waters regardless of whether it rained yesterday. HVAC pre-cooling on a fixed schedule starts regardless of whether today happens to be unusually mild. In both cases, weather data is a readily available signal that fixed-schedule automation simply doesn't use.

How weather-integrated automation actually works

Weather APIs (forecast and, in more advanced setups, local weather station data) feed directly into automation logic — irrigation skips a cycle if significant rain occurred recently or is forecast imminently; HVAC pre-cooling adjusts its start time or setpoint based on the actual forecast temperature rather than a worst-case assumption baked into a static schedule.

Local station data vs regional forecast APIs

A regional weather API gives a reasonable general forecast, but a farm or large site can see genuinely different conditions than the nearest weather station a few kilometres away. For larger agricultural operations especially, a local weather station feeding hyperlocal data into irrigation decisions is often worth the additional investment over relying purely on a general API.
