What a digital twin actually is
A digital twin is a live digital model of a physical asset or facility, continuously updated with real sensor data, that mirrors the actual current state of the thing it represents — not just a static 3D model, but one that reflects live conditions like temperature, occupancy or equipment status as they change.
Where it's genuinely useful, not just impressive
A digital twin earns its cost where visualising a complex system spatially actually helps decision-making — a large building's HVAC zones, a factory floor's equipment layout, or a multi-building campus where seeing status overlaid on an actual floor plan is more useful than a list of numbers on a dashboard.
When it's not worth building
For a small site or a simple system, a digital twin is significant additional engineering effort for a visualisation benefit that a well-designed conventional dashboard already delivers. It's worth being honest about this before committing budget to something that sounds impressive but doesn't add proportionate value for the specific site in question.
