Choosing an IoT Gateway: What It Actually Does Between Devices and the Cloud
A gateway is the quiet middle layer that makes most IoT systems work at all. Here's what it actually does, and how to choose one.
What a gateway actually does
Most sensors and field devices don't talk directly to the internet — they speak a local protocol (Zigbee, Modbus, BLE) that only makes sense nearby. A gateway sits between them and the cloud, translating that local protocol into something a dashboard or app can consume, and often doing basic local processing before anything leaves the site.
What to check before choosing one
Protocol support has to match the actual devices being deployed — a gateway that only speaks MQTT is no help for a Modbus-based factory floor. Local storage and processing capability matters if any decisions need to happen without waiting on the cloud, and the number of devices a single gateway can reliably handle should be checked against the site's real device count, not just a marketing spec.
Why this decision is made early, not late
The gateway is effectively the foundation every device connects through, so choosing one that can't scale or doesn't support a protocol you'll need later means a costly swap down the line. It's worth specifying gateway requirements against a realistic 2–3 year device roadmap, not just what's being installed this month.
