Why network equipment needs its own backup plan

A building's main inverter or generator often covers lighting and major appliances but doesn't always extend cleanly to the server rack or network cabinet, especially in older buildings where the rack was added after the original electrical design. Without a dedicated UPS, a power cut can take the entire monitoring and security system offline at exactly the moment it matters most.

How sizing is actually calculated

UPS capacity needs to be calculated against the real combined load of everything connected — switches, NVRs, gateways, access-control panels — not a rough guess, and against how many minutes or hours of runtime is actually needed before mains or a generator kicks back in. Undersizing is a common mistake that leaves a UPS that looks adequate on paper but drains in minutes under real load.

What's easy to overlook

UPS batteries degrade over time and lose capacity even if never fully drained — a UPS that provided 45 minutes of runtime when installed may only provide 15 three years later without anyone noticing until a real outage exposes it. Periodic load testing, not just visual inspection, is what actually confirms a UPS will perform when it's needed.
