Time Synchronization (NTP) and Why It Matters for Multi-Device Systems
A small, invisible detail that causes real problems when it's wrong — devices with mismatched clocks produce logs and footage that don't line up.
Why device clocks drift, and why it matters
Every device has its own internal clock, and without synchronization, those clocks gradually drift apart — a camera's timestamp might be a few minutes off from an access-control log's timestamp within weeks. When investigating an incident, that mismatch makes it genuinely difficult to correlate events across systems that should agree on when something happened.
What NTP actually does
Network Time Protocol synchronises every device on a network against a common accurate time source, keeping clocks aligned automatically and continuously rather than requiring manual correction. Setting this up properly across a site's gateways, NVRs, controllers and access panels is a small piece of configuration with outsized importance for anything requiring cross-system investigation.
Where this becomes critical
For security investigations, compliance logs, and any incident where the sequence of events across multiple systems matters, accurate and consistent timestamps aren't optional — a timeline that can't be trusted because timestamps don't align undermines the whole record, however good the individual data is. This is a five-minute configuration step worth confirming explicitly during any multi-device installation.
