Check-metering: for internal visibility, not billing
Check-metering measures consumption at a specific point — a piece of equipment, a process line — purely for internal monitoring and analysis, with no billing implication attached to the reading. It's used to understand where energy is going, not to charge anyone for it.
Why the distinction affects the equipment specified
Because sub-metering results in a bill someone pays, it typically needs a higher-accuracy, often utility-grade meter that can withstand scrutiny if a tenant disputes a charge. Check-metering, being purely internal, can often use a lower-cost meter since the consequence of a small inaccuracy is far less significant. Knowing which purpose a given meter serves avoids over- or under-specifying equipment for the job.
