ISO 50001 certifies not a specific level of energy efficiency, but that a business has a structured, ongoing Energy Management System in place — a documented process for continuously identifying, measuring and acting on energy performance, rather than a one-time achievement of a particular efficiency benchmark.
What's actually required to earn and keep it
A documented energy policy, baseline energy data against which improvement is measured, defined objectives and action plans, and — critically — an ongoing monitoring and review process, since certification requires periodic re-audit to confirm the management system is still actively functioning, not just that it existed once at initial certification.
Why the monitoring infrastructure is the hard part
Many businesses can write the required policy documents without much difficulty; the genuine challenge is the ongoing measurement and monitoring infrastructure that has to actually function continuously to satisfy re-certification.
