Energy Benchmarking: Is Your Site's Consumption Actually High
A rising bill feels bad regardless of context. Benchmarking is what tells you whether your site is actually inefficient, or just bigger and busier.
Why 'the bill went up' isn't the same as 'we're inefficient'
Consumption naturally rises with more occupancy, longer operating hours, or a hotter season — none of which is a sign of a problem. Without a reference point, it's impossible to tell whether a rising bill reflects genuine inefficiency or simply more legitimate activity, and reacting to the number alone risks fixing something that isn't actually broken.
What benchmarking actually compares
Energy use is normalised against a relevant metric — per square foot for a building, per room-night for a hotel, per unit produced for a factory — and compared either against the same site's own historical performance or against typical figures for similar sites. That normalisation is what makes the comparison fair between, say, a half-occupied hotel and a fully-booked one.
What a benchmarking report is actually useful for
Beyond satisfying curiosity, a credible benchmark is often exactly what a lender, certification body or ESG questionnaire wants to see — it's evidence, not just a claim, that a site is being managed efficiently relative to its peers. It's also the fastest way to know whether an energy optimisation effort is actually working over time, rather than relying on a feeling that the bill 'seems better.'
