Why cameras are usually the biggest bandwidth consumer

A single 4K camera streaming continuously can use several megabits per second, and a site with dozens of cameras adds up fast — far more than the sensor traffic that often gets more design attention despite using a fraction of the bandwidth. Camera count and resolution should be the starting point for any bandwidth planning exercise.

What actually gets underestimated

Simultaneous viewing (multiple people watching live feeds at once, not just the recording happening in the background) and remote access from outside the site both add real load beyond the baseline recording bandwidth. A network sized only for local recording, without accounting for these additional uses, is often the reason live viewing feels laggy even though recording itself works fine.

Planning with headroom, not at capacity

A network designed to exactly meet current bandwidth needs leaves no room for adding a camera or two later, or for a temporary spike in usage — proper planning builds in headroom, typically 30–50% above calculated current need, specifically so the system doesn't need to be redesigned the first time it grows.
