Access Control Integration: Merging Old Card Systems Into a New Dashboard

An access control system tied to hundreds of already-issued cards and biometric enrolments represents real sunk investment — replacing it means re-enrolling every user and reissuing every card, which is disruptive for a large site. In most cases, the existing controller can be read from and, where needed, written to by an integration layer, without touching the enrolled user database at all.

Access logs (who entered, when, at which door) surfaced alongside camera footage and alarm events, so a security team gets a full picture from one screen instead of a separate access-control terminal nobody else can log into. Door status and alerts (forced door, door held open) can also be surfaced centrally rather than only visible on the original system's local panel.

A truly obsolete system with no data export or communication interface at all, or one from a manufacturer that's stopped supporting it entirely, is a case where integration isn't realistically possible and replacement is the honest recommendation. That's a minority of cases, but it's worth an honest technical assessment rather than assuming either extreme by default.
