Why consumer speed comparisons miss the real industrial value

5G's headline consumer benefit is faster download speeds, but for industrial IoT applications, the more relevant improvements are dramatically lower latency (near real-time response, relevant for time-critical control applications) and the ability to support a much higher density of connected devices in one area than 4G could reliably handle.

Where this actually matters for an industrial site

A factory with hundreds of wireless sensors, or an application requiring near-instant response time (a safety interlock, remote-controlled equipment), benefits from 5G's specific technical characteristics in ways a general internet connectivity upgrade wouldn't — this is a genuinely different value proposition than 'faster browsing.'

Why this is still a specialised, not default, choice

Private 5G networks for industrial sites are a growing but still relatively specialised and costly option, generally justified for larger facilities with genuine latency-sensitive or high-device-density requirements — for most smaller sites, standard Wi-Fi and wired infrastructure remains the more cost-effective choice, with 5G reserved for specific applications that actually need its particular strengths.
