Why automation makes Wi-Fi coverage non-negotiable

A single router at the front of the house is often fine for browsing but leaves back bedrooms, upper floors or a garden area with weak or no signal — and every Wi-Fi-connected switch, camera or sensor in that zone becomes unreliable or offline. Automation raises the bar on Wi-Fi coverage in a way that streaming video usually doesn't, because a device that drops offline stops responding to voice commands and scenes entirely, not just buffering.

Mesh systems vs a single router with extenders

A mesh Wi-Fi system uses multiple nodes that share one network name and hand devices off between them as you move through the house, which is what most modern homes need for even, reliable coverage. Older-style range extenders create a second, separate network name and often introduce a noticeable speed drop, which is more likely to cause the exact connectivity issues automation is sensitive to.

What to plan before installing smart devices

It's worth having Wi-Fi coverage assessed as part of the automation site survey, not as an afterthought once devices start dropping — many automation protocols also use a 2.4GHz band specifically for range and device compatibility reasons, which some routers don't broadcast by default and need to be enabled for. Getting this right before device installation avoids the common experience of a smart home that 'randomly' stops responding.
