Where real-time actually matters

Live camera feeds, security alerts, and anything tied to an immediate safety or operational response genuinely need real-time data — a fire alert that's five minutes delayed has failed at its one job. For these use cases, the extra engineering cost of real-time infrastructure is clearly worth it.

Where batch reporting is actually the better choice

Monthly energy reports, historical trend analysis, and most business-review dashboards don't need second-by-second updates — a nightly or hourly refresh delivers the same practical value at a fraction of the infrastructure cost and complexity. Building real-time pipelines for data nobody's watching live is a common place projects overspend without realising it.

How to decide, use case by use case

The right question for each piece of data isn't 'could this be real-time' — almost anything could be — it's 'does a delay of a few minutes or hours actually change what someone does with this information.' Where the answer is no, batch reporting is the more cost-effective and often more reliable choice, and it's worth making that call explicitly for each data type rather than defaulting to real-time everywhere.
