Physical deterrents: fencing and barriers
Fencing, walls and barriers are the most basic layer — a physical obstacle that slows or discourages entry — but on their own provide no detection or alerting if breached, and a determined intruder can defeat most standard fencing given enough time and privacy.
Beam sensors and intrusion detection
Infrared or microwave beam sensors create an invisible detection line along a perimeter, triggering an alert if crossed — a genuine detection layer that fencing alone doesn't provide, though beams can be prone to false triggers from wildlife or vegetation if not properly positioned and calibrated.
Thermal cameras for low-visibility conditions
Thermal cameras detect heat signatures rather than relying on visible light, which means they remain effective at night, in fog, or in conditions where standard cameras struggle — particularly valuable for large open perimeters where consistent visual-light coverage is impractical. They cost more than standard cameras, which is why they're typically reserved for higher-security perimeters rather than applied everywhere.
