IPv6 and IoT: Why Address Space Actually Matters at Scale

As IoT deployments grow, a technical detail that used to be background noise — IP addressing — starts to matter in practical ways. Here's why.

Why IPv4 address space is a genuine constraint

IPv4, the older and still most common internet addressing standard, has a limited total number of possible addresses — manageable for a home network with a handful of devices behind a router, but a genuine constraint for a large deployment with thousands of individually addressable sensors and devices.

What IPv6 actually adds

IPv6 offers a vastly larger address space, effectively removing the addressing constraint entirely — every device in even a very large IoT deployment can have its own unique, globally addressable IP address without the workarounds (like network address translation) that IPv4 networks often rely on at scale.

Why this is worth asking about for a large deployment

For a small home or office network, this distinction rarely matters in practice. For a large-scale industrial IoT or smart city deployment with thousands of devices, IPv6 support (in both the devices themselves and the network infrastructure) is worth confirming explicitly during network design, rather than discovering an addressing bottleneck after the deployment has already scaled up.
