Demand-Side Management: Shifting Load to Avoid Peak Tariffs

Some electricity tariffs charge more during certain hours. Here's how shifting flexible loads to cheaper windows actually reduces a bill.

How time-of-day tariffs work

Many commercial tariffs charge different rates depending on the time of day — often higher during peak demand hours and lower overnight or during off-peak windows. A site paying the same attention to consumption timing as it does to total consumption can meaningfully lower its bill without actually using less electricity overall.

What's actually flexible enough to shift

Not every load can move — a factory production line running to a fixed schedule usually can't. But water pumping, certain batch processes, EV or equipment charging, and some HVAC pre-cooling can often be shifted to cheaper windows without disrupting operations, if the shift is planned deliberately rather than left to habit.

Why this needs monitoring, not just a policy

A rule to 'run the pump at night' only works if someone or something enforces it consistently — monitoring and, ideally, automated scheduling are what make demand-side management stick beyond the first few weeks of good intentions. Combined with load and tariff data, it's one of the more straightforward wins in an energy optimisation plan, because it changes when, not how much, a site consumes.
