Data Export and Interoperability: Avoiding Vendor Lock-In on Your Own Data
Your systems generate your data — but not every platform makes it easy to get that data back out. Here's why export capability matters before you commit.
The lock-in risk most people don't check for upfront
Years of sensor readings, alerts and operational history accumulate inside a dashboard platform, and it's easy to assume that data is straightforwardly yours to take elsewhere — but some platforms make export deliberately difficult or limited, effectively locking a business into that vendor by making the switching cost prohibitively high.
What to check before committing to a platform
Ask specifically whether raw historical data can be exported in a standard, usable format (CSV, JSON) — not just viewed within the platform's own reports. Ask whether that export is self-service or requires a support request each time. And ask what happens to the data if you eventually cancel — is it retained, deleted immediately, or held hostage pending a fee.
Why this matters even if you never plan to switch
Beyond switching platforms, easy data export also enables independent analysis, combining data with other business systems, and satisfying an auditor or lender's request for raw underlying data — capabilities worth having regardless of whether a platform change is ever on the table. Treat export capability as a real requirement to evaluate, not an edge case.
